Veteran striker Francesco Caputo has officially terminated his contract with Empoli, bringing an end to his second stint with the Tuscan club. The 36-year-old forward, who rejoined Empoli in January 2023, has mutually agreed to part ways with the Serie A side.
Caputo’s last appearance for Roberto D’Aversa’s team came on August 17th, when he played the final five minutes in a draw against Monza. Since then, the experienced striker has found playing time limited, leading to this decision.
The Italian forward, known affectionately as “Ciccio,” had a successful first spell with Empoli from 2017 to 2019, during which he helped the club gain promotion to Serie A and established himself as a prolific goalscorer in the top flight. His performances earned him a move to Sassuolo and later to Sampdoria before returning to Empoli.
Caputo’s departure marks the end of an era for both the player and the club. His goal-scoring prowess and leadership on the pitch have been valuable assets for Empoli over the years. As a free agent, Caputo will now be looking for a new challenge to continue his career, while Empoli will seek to fill the void left by the departure of their experienced striker.
This move allows both parties to move forward, with Empoli potentially looking to younger talent to lead their attack, and Caputo having the opportunity to find a club where he can contribute more regularly in the twilight of his career.
