Gasperini: ‘We threw away the first half’

Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini concedes that his side threw away the first half, but concedes that Lecce were worthy winners. La Dea slumped to a second consecutive defeat, losing 2-1 to I Giallorossi, and struggling to get a foothold in the game. Speaking to Sky Sport Italia after the game, Gasperini was left to rue a missed opportunity after rotating part of the team:

I made the changes at the back and on the flanks, due to Demiral’s ailments and to preserve Toloi. On the flanks, however, I wanted to test our guys and it seemed like the right match to do so. It was not the changes that affected the result, but the two goals we conceded when we had approached the match well.

Lecce are an aggressive and dynamic team, they gave a great performance, we threw away the first half with those two goals that were conceded in a few minutes, we came back into it, but at the back, we took too many chances. Then in the second half everyone was trying to win it on their own, everyone was carrying the ball and we gave up making passes. We managed to do very little and lost the thread.”
