Giroud: ‘Thank you Milan, you welcomed me like a brother, you will always be in my heart’

Start

Olivier Giroud bid an emotional farewell to Milan after scoring his final goal for the club in a 3-3 draw with Salernitana. The Frenchman is making the move to MLS this summer and will join up with LAFC in the coming weeks. Speaking after the Rossoneri’s last game of the season, he addressed the San Siro crowd, thanking them for their support over the years:

On the Pitch

“Good evening, San Siro. I want to thank the club for their trust, all the executives who welcomed me like a brother into this family. The trust from the executives, thank you Ibra. I want to thank the coach for his trust and support during difficult times we shared. It’s very important to stay united in such moments. We had an incredible first year, one of the most beautiful emotions of my career in my opinion. I especially want to thank all my teammates; we are a team and a family. Thank you guys. This chant will always remain in my heart (‘Si è girato Giroud’). When I was little, Simon Kjaer and I dreamed of this Milan. Today, we’ve made a journey that makes us proud. I will never forget these three seasons at Milan. FORZA MILAN!”

Speaking to DAZN

Giroud later spoke to DAZN, sharing his feelings and emotions as he prepares to leave Milan: “I really wanted to score tonight, you could see it from my celebration. I needed this goal to say goodbye to Milan. Every goal here has been a special emotion in this stadium. As I said before, I am very grateful for having had this opportunity; at 35, the club trusted me. I’ve experienced a second youth here with all the ‘kids’ here (laughs). I had a top welcome; everyone was top with me. The most iconic moment? Certainly when I turned around in the derby. Before that moment, I hadn’t understood what Milan meant to the Milanisti. I was very grateful and proud to play here, but after scoring that brace, I rarely experienced such emotion and love for football as in this stadium. Thank you to the fans for this passion we share together.”
