Maldini’s Milan future in the balance

Start

A report from Il Corriere della Sera suggests that Paolo Maldini’s future with Milan lies in the balance, following a disappointing season. The newspaper claims that after elimination from the Champions League at the hands of Inter, the Rossoneri will focus on making it into the top four to qualify for next seasons competition, but there are differing views for the future of the club.

The newspaper suggests that the next month will be decisive for the club and players, and also for Maldini, who was critical of the management for a failure to invest more heavily in the transfer market.

Speaking after Tuesday’s defeat, the Rossoneri director commented that “the gap is too clear, we need to invest,” speaking in reference to their city rivals, Inter Milan. “We are not structured to compete in the two competitions, we also told our owners,” he went on to say, “Being back at this level must be exploited, also at the economic level by investing to stay among the top four and do well in Italy.”

In June, RedBird’s owner Gerry Cardinale, along with the Rossoneri’s CEO Giorgio Furlani, will be called upon for evaluations on the project, present and future. While coach Stefano Pioli’s future at the club is not thought to be at risk, Maldini may have a different vision for the future of Milan, which Il Corriere claim may be at odds with the senior management and ownership.

La Gazzetta dello Sport report on similar lines, suggesting there will be a ‘mini-revolution’ at the club, with several fringe players on the move this summer. Along with the transfers out, Redbird and Maldini will need to ‘reconcile’ their visions for the future of the club, before moving forward together.
