Motta: “I always tell them to play out from the back”

Start

Bologna coach Thiago Motta was thrilled with his teams 4-0 thumping of Lecce. saying he takes ‘ 0.00001% credit’ for the teams third goal. A brace from Riccardo Orsolini and a goal apiece from Jens Odgaard and Sam Beukema helped propel the Rossoblu up to 5th place, keeping them firmly on course for European football next season. Speaking with DAZN, Motta explained some of his tactical choices, highlighting the importance of playing out from the back:

“We played a great game. Throughout the match, we were focused and determined. We deserved this performance. Winning is good for everyone, and the atmosphere at the stadium today was fantastic. My credit for the third goal action? Yes, I take 0.00001% credit. In the end, the decision on the field is made by them, they are the real protagonists of this sport. I won’t come here and tell you that we tried it because it’s not true. This action starts from the players who have the right spirit, desire, and quality. They play with selflessness, which leads us to make these great plays.”

Thiago Motta then continued: “Building from the back, if we do it well, always puts our opponents in difficulty. If we keep giving the ball away, we create nothing. When you play out from the back, it’s never solely the individual’s fault; others must help too. They have the responsibility to play out from the back because they have the quality. But the players have the right to make some mistakes. And in any case, the responsibility is mine; I always tell them to play out from the back.”

The coach concluded: “Are we the second team with the most points at home after Inter? I’m happy, I know the level of the league. We know what our strengths are. We have many merits. Only on the first day did I not have the feeling that we could compete because Milan was superior, although we played well in that game. In all the other matches, my great satisfaction is that we have always been able to compete with everyone. Let’s not forget that we have our level, while others are stronger. Yet we have always fought. The fans’ chant for Europe? I heard it, I’m very happy. Our president deserves it for his work and the respect he has for us and for the game. There is great enthusiasm here, we must use it to continue working and fighting. Now we have to recover as we have Fiorentina shortly, and we must be ready.”
