Mourinho: ‘We never stopped trying to score’

Roma coach Jose Mourinho believes his side gave everything to try and beat Real Socidead: “We never stopped trying to score goals.” The Giallorossi held a healthy 2-0 lead from the first leg in Rome and were held to a goalless draw in San Sebastián, despite Chris Smalling having the ball in the net. Speaking with Sky Sport Italia (as quoted by Romapress) Mourinho was satisfied with the result over two legs, saying the players were ‘tired but happy’:

“After the initial score of 2-0 Real Sociedad did all they possibly could to try to change the result, driven by their crowd of supporters.”

“Roma however gave everything and also scored a goal, which was cancelled. At first, we tried to attack. After that we recomposed ourselves defensively, looking for the counterattack. We never stopped trying to score goals.”

“The lads are the ones who put in the work, I help and make my contribution. We know that we have difficulties, such as Matic’s injury. Wijnaldum should not have played two consecutive 90 minute games in three days. We’ll head back to Rome tired but happy.
