AC Milan are on the verge of naming Sergio Conceição as their new head coach, replacing Paulo Fonseca following a disappointing 1-1 home draw against Roma. The former Porto manager, who was previously considered at the end of last season, has reportedly reached a preliminary agreement with the Rossoneri club after being alerted to the possibility due to the team’s underwhelming performance in the league.

Milan currently sits eighth in the Serie A table, eight points adrift of the Champions League qualification spots. According to reports from Calciomercato, Conceição is expected to arrive in Milan today, while his agent Jorge Mendes is finalizing the last details of the agreement with the club.

Conceição, who has been a free agent since parting ways with Porto last summer after a successful seven-year stint that included three Portuguese league titles, is poised to sign a contract with Milan until June 30, 2025. The deal is reported to include a salary of one million euros per year, with an option for the club to extend the contract until June 2027.

The Portuguese manager is said to have turned down offers from Brazil and Premier League side Wolverhampton in favour of the opportunity to coach Milan.

Meanwhile, Paulo Fonseca’s tenure at Milan comes to an end after just 25 matches across all competitions. His contract, which was set to run until June 2027, is expected to be terminated early with a financial settlement. Fonseca’s dismissal comes as a result of poor results and reported difficulties in managing the dressing room and the team’s star players from the outset of his tenure.
