Luka Modric is set to join AC Milan as a free agent this summer, however, the deal has hit a slight bump after the midfielder postponed his medical.
Is Luka Modric Joining AC Milan?
After 13-years in the Spanish capital, Luka Modric has decided to call an end to his Real Madrid career and will not be signing a new deal with Los Blancos.
His contract with the club will officially come to an end after June 30th, meaning the veteran midfielder will become a free agent in the coming weeks.
Many wondered whether the 39-year-old would retire from the sport altogether or look to continue his illustrious career in a different city and see out his playing days elsewhere.
The Croatian decided to play for one more season and over the last few days, the former Tottenham Hotspur player agreed to join AC Milan in the Serie A for the 2025/26 campaign.
New manager, Massimiliano Allegri, has already shown signs of intent with this deal and is set to make more big choices, even debating the possibility of Santiago Gimenez leaving the club this summer.
During his time in Madrid, Modric has won a multitude of trophies including six Champions League titles, four La Liga titles, two Copa del Rays and five Club World Cups.
Such a high level of performance also saw the 39-year-old reach the pinnacle of soccer individually, winning the Ballon d’Or in 2018 after helping Croatia reach the World Cup final.
In his final La Liga appearance for Los Blancos, Modric was substituted in the 87th minute against Real Sociedad and received a guard of honor as he left the pitch.
He went on social to post about the special event, saying: “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.”
Why Has Modric Postponed His Medical?
After this deal was made more concrete supporters expected to see an official statement that confirmed Modric’s move to Milan, however, a full agreement has not been completed.
According to reports, Modric has requested that his move to Milan be halted and in particular, for the medical to occur after Real Madrid’s FCWC campaign.
Madrid are the favorites to win the Club World Cup on the best betting apps and Modric has been included in Xabi Alonso’s 34-man squad for the competition.
Milan had scheduled a medical in Croatia as the midfielder was on international duty for his nation, but out of respect for Madrid he postponed it until a later date.
Modric’s deal with the Rossoneri will come in the form of a one-year agreement which can be extended by another season if both parties agree it has been a success.
