Will Santiago Gimenez Leave AC Milan? Mexican’s Future In Doubt As Massimiliano Allegri Targets Fresh Striker Options

Start

Santiago Gimenez could be on his way out of Milan after less than six months, as Massimiliano Allegri is reportedly keen on landing a new striker this summer.

Will Santiago Gimenez Leave AC Milan?

After an impressive run in the Netherlands with Feyenoord, contributing to 79 goals in 105 appearances (65G + 14A) Santiago Gimenez earned a $35 million move to AC Milan in January 2025.

Many expected the Mexican international to hit the ground running, however, after 19 appearances for Rossoneri the striker has only managed to score six times.

These poor performances saw Gimenez drop to the bench towards the end of the 2024/25 campaign and on his return to the starting eleven, Gimenez was sent off after 21 minutes against Roma in May.

Now, after AC Milan appointed Massimiliano Allegri, the Mexican’s time in Italy is reportedly up in the air as the new manager looks to make an instant impact on his team.

Allegri was appointed for his second spell at the San Siro in recent weeks and will take full control at the start of July, returning to the club he coached between 2010-2014.

Since his time in Milan, Allegri established himself in Italy with Juventus across two spells, coaching The Old Lady between 2014-2019 and then again from 2021-2024.

During his time with Juventus, Allegri won the Serie A title on five consecutive occasions between 2014-2019 and added to his maiden title victory which came with Milan in 2010/11.

Gimenez’s poor performances symbolized a disappointing performance from the AC Milan side in general, finishing eighth in Serie A and exiting the Champions League in the Round of 16.

This led the club to make a huge decision over their managerial situation and the Milan decided to sack Sergio Conceicao after just one season in Milan – a choice that has seen AC become one of the favourites to win the league on Serie A betting sites.

Now, with Allegri at the helm there could be some more changes coming at the club and the former Juventus manager is reportedly looking into the possibility of replacing Gimenez this summer.

Who Does Massimiliano Allegri Want To Sign For AC Milan?

Obviously, if AC Milan do remove Gimenez from their books then a replacement will be needed during the summer transfer window and a few names have already popped up.

One player that could be targeted is Juventus striker, Dusan Vlahovic, who was brought to Turin by Allegri in January 2022 and has struggled to hit form in recent times.

After a strong start to the 2024/25 campaign, where the Serbian scored six goals in 10 matches, injuries began to creep in to Vlahovic’s season and ended the campaign with 10 goals in 29 league appearances.

His contract with Juventus ends in June 2026 and Allegri has reportedly been in contact with Vlahovic over reuniting in Milan – but talks between clubs are at a preliminary stage.

Another possible option is Atalanta star, Mateo Retegui, who enjoyed a successful Serie A campaign individually and finished the season as the leagues top scorer with 25 goals.

The Italian joined Atalanta in August 2024, meaning he is still fresh into his time with the club and his deal does not expire until June 2028 – meaning a transfer would require a huge fee.

However, there has been a shake-up in Bergamo over the last few weeks as Gian Piero Gasperini left his post as Atalanta manager and was replaced by Ivan Juric.
