Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana has been dropped from Cameroon’s World Cup match against Serbia with reports suggesting he has left the squad. Onana played in Cameroon’s opening game against Switzerland but wasn’t included in the starting XI for today’s match.
Reports from Goal Italia and others suggest that he’s been dropped for ‘disciplinary’ reasons but there are suggestions of a deeper rift.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that Cameroon head coach Rigobert Song wants a more ‘traditional’ approach to the goalkeeping, taking fewer risks, while Onana has stated he has no intention of changing his style. As such, the keeper has been excluded after the disagreement.
There’s a further report from journalist Helena Condis who write that former Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o tried to intervene to help mediate the situation, but his efforts were unsuccessful with Onana expected to leave the group and not feature again in the World Cup.
