Atalanta are ramping up efforts to sign Mateo Retegui as they urgently seek a replacement for the injured Gianluca Scamacca, who is sidelined for at least 6-7 months following knee surgery. With the European Super Cup final against Real Madrid approaching and the start of the league season just around the corner, the Bergamo club has identified the Italian national team striker as their top target.

Calciomercato confirm that Initial contacts between Atalanta and Genoa have established the starting positions for negotiations. Atalanta’s opening offer for the Italian-Argentine forward, who scored 7 goals in 29 Serie A appearances last season and recently participated in the European Championship with Italy, is slightly under 20 million euros. However, Genoa, who have Retegui under contract until June 2027, considers this bid too low.

Genoa’s initial asking price is significantly higher, around €35 million. This steep valuation is partly due to the potential departure of another key forward, Gudmundsson, who is linked with a move to Fiorentina. Genoa’s manager Alberto Gilardino is concerned about weakening his attacking options so close to the new season, hence the high price tag for Retegui.

The substantial difference between Atalanta’s offer and Genoa’s demand is also influenced by interest from other clubs. Both Juventus and Roma have previously made inquiries about Retegui, seeing him as a potential rotation option for their respective strikers, Dusan Vlahovic and new signing Artem Dovbyk.

Despite the apparent gap in valuations, negotiations are expected to continue. Atalanta is serious about securing Retegui’s services, and importantly, the player himself has shown openness to a potential move before the transfer window closes on August 30th.
