Inter Milan and AC Milan Set Sights On Atletico Madrid Star After Rumors Over January Departure Grow

Julian Alvarez is reportedly considering a move away from Atletico Madrid in January and the Argentinian has attracted interest from several Serie A sides.

Will Julian Alvarez Leave Atletico Madrid In January?

The Atletico Madrid star has been linked with a move away from the Spain during the January transfer window, with reports suggesting that PSG are leading the race for Alvarez’s signature.

Rumors over an exit in the winter have spawned after Atletico’s poor start to the season, as Diego Simeone’s side failed to win any of their opening three league matches (2D + 1L).

Atletico have turned this form around in recent weeks, with the opening day defeat to Espanyol being their only loss of the season – winning three of the last five La Liga fixtures.

One of these victories came in the Madrid derby, as Atletico beat Real Madrid 5-2 and Alvarez was one of the star performers after bagging a brace against Los Blancos.

The Argentine has contributed to 10 goals in nine appearances across all competitions for Atletico this season (7G + 3A) – taking his overall tally to 36 goals and 11 assists in 66 appearances since signing from Manchester City in August 2024.

Interestingly, Alvarez has already matched his Manchester City goal-tally despite making 37 less appearances for Atletico and is showing signs of the player many expected in England.

Alvarez first caught the eyes of clubs around Europe during his time with River Plate, as the Argentinian side continue to produce multiple talents – with the latest being Santiago Lencina who is now attracting interest from Serie A.

The Argentine moved to Manchester in 2022 and went on to win two Premier League titles, Champions League, FA Cup, UEFA Supercup and FIFA Club World Cup.

Success at club level is not Alvarez’s only selling factor, as the Atletico Madrid striker has been a vital member of the Argentinian national team – winning two Copa Americas and the World Cup.

Winning such a variety of trophies has put Alvarez up with the elite strikers across Europe and his current form means any interested party will need to submit a monstrous bid.

The 25-year-old joined Atletico for €75 million and has five-years remaining on his current deal, with some reports suggesting the striker has a €200m release clause.

Could Julian Alvarez Move To Serie A?

There are only a few clubs in Europe that can consider a move for the Argentinian striker given the transfer fee that would be required to sign Alvarez.

This means that the only Serie A sides that could be in contention are Inter, Napoli, Juventus and AC Milan, however, the two Milan sides are the standout options.

Inter have been one of the standout sides in Europe over recent years, reaching two of the last three Champions League finals and Cristian Chivu is looking to reclaim the Serie A title after the Nerazzurri finished second last season.

AC Milan have not been able to compete with their city-based rivals in recent times, as the Rossoneri finished eighth last season and have failed to make an impact on the European stage.

However, Massimiliano Allegri’s side could use their current roster in a move for Julian Alvarez, with Rafael Leao being one of the highest-rated wingers in Europe.

The Portuguese star has been one of Milan’s best players in recent years but has struggled with injury this season, but Christian Pulisic has stepped-in to guide Milan to third in Serie A this season.

Milan are unlikely to submit an appropriate bid for Alvarez regardless of their 2025/26 performance, however, Leao could be used in a swap deal as Allegri is on the hint for a new striker.
