Riccardo Calafiori is set to join Arsenal instead of Juventus, much to the disappointment of one-time Bianconeri captain Leonardo Bonucci. The former Juventus defender expressed his regret over the transfer, as Bologna’s asking price of around €50 million was beyond Juventus’ reach, despite Juve director Cristiano Giuntoli’s persistent efforts.
Arsenal’s offer of a significantly higher salary, €4.5 million compared to 2.5 million, sealed the deal for Calafiori’s move to the Premier League.
In an interview with Sky Sport (via TuttoBolognaWeb), Bonucci shared his thoughts on the transfer: “I’m sorry about his transfer to Arsenal, I would have liked to see him at Juventus. Calafiori is different from the others, he plays with flair, has personality and makes forward runs. We’re exporting a great player who will be a reference point for the national team for 15 years.”
Bonucci also commented on Thiago Motta’s potential move to Juventus, stating: “Motta, after what he has shown at Bologna, with the players he will have at his disposal at Juventus, there will be excitement. I hope he can compete for the Scudetto.”
Calafiori was not called up for Bologna’s pre-season squad list, with reports suggesting a transfer to the Gunners is imminent. The 22-year-old is expected to net the Rossoblu at least €50 million, half of which will be paid to FC Basel, who retained a 50% resale fee when they sold the centre-back to Bologna.
