Calhanoglu Commits To Inter As Galatasaray Transfer Interest Collapses
Hakan Çalhanoğlu has ended transfer speculation by confirming he is happy at Inter and targeting more titles with the club.
Hakan Çalhanoğlu has ended a year of transfer speculation with a firm declaration of his future at Inter. Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Turkish midfielder said: “I want only Inter,” dismissing any lingering hope of a move back to his homeland with the line “Forget Turkey, I’m staying here.”
The comments ran as Gazzetta’s front-page headline on Saturday, coinciding with Inter’s “Derby d’Italia” pre-season friendly against Juventus in Perth — the last time the two clubs will meet before 2027.
According to the report, Çalhanoğlu’s stance follows the collapse of Galatasaray’s long-running pursuit of him, and he is now awaiting a call from Inter’s hierarchy over a new contract.
Why Galatasaray’s Pursuit Of Calhanoglu Collapsed
Çalhanoğlu, a lifelong Galatasaray supporter, has been linked with a “dream” return to Turkey for well over a year.
Interest intensified through the first half of 2026: in April, Turkish pundit Taner Karaman claimed the move was “99% certain,” and reports suggested Çalhanoğlu himself had cooled on renewing his Inter contract, with talks between his camp and Galatasaray described as ongoing.
But Galatasaray were reportedly unwilling to go beyond around €15 million for a player who, as a free-agent risk for Inter in 2027, still carries significant value.
The Turkish club’s priority also shifted toward completing a deal for Victor Osimhen, leaving little room to fund a marquee move for Çalhanoğlu on top of it.
His agent, Gordon Stipic, had repeatedly denied any concrete talks had taken place, telling Fabrizio Romano in April that speculation “has emerged several times in the past and is now being recycled.”
By August, with no formal offer on the table, the saga appears to have run its course.
Why Cristian Chivu And Inter Want Calhanoglu To Stay
Even amid the uncertainty, Çalhanoğlu remained central to Inter’s season. Despite an injury-hit campaign that limited him to 22 Serie A appearances, he contributed nine goals and four assists as Inter reclaimed the Scudetto from Napoli.
Head coach Cristian Chivu has consistently backed him to stay, with La Gazzetta reporting earlier this year that Chivu passed on a clear recommendation to the club’s management: keep his deep-lying playmaker.
That preference lines up with Inter’s broader approach to the squad this summer. The club recently rejected a formal €40 million offer from Brentford for midfielder Aleksandar Stankovic, with Chivu, the player and his family unanimously turning it down.
Stankovic — who returned to Inter after a title-winning loan at Club Brugge — is being groomed as Çalhanoğlu’s primary deputy at the base of Chivu’s midfield, rather than as a replacement. The message from Inter this window has been continuity, not a summer sell-off.
Calhanoglu’s Contract Situation: What Happens Next
Çalhanoğlu’s current deal runs to June 2027, meaning Inter risked losing him for nothing in a year’s time if talks dragged on.
That risk is precisely why some reports as recently as late June suggested he could leave for free at the end of the coming season rather than sign fresh terms.
His comments this week point the other way — toward an extension, not an exit — but Inter have yet to confirm any formal renewal, and Çalhanoğlu himself said only that he’s “awaiting the club’s call.”
Given how many times this story has swung between “leaving” and “staying” over the past twelve months, Inter fans have reason for cautious optimism rather than certainty.
For now, though, the player who once seemed destined for Istanbul says his focus is on helping Chivu’s side push deep into the Champions League this season.
