His managerial career is still very much in its infancy, but if Cristian Chivu can begin to deliver the sort of consistency witnessed at Parma, Inter Milan can expect a style of play of play as bold as the appointment itself.
Cristian Chivu Tactics and Style of Play
Cristian Chivu arrives at Inter Milan with just half a season of senior soccer on his managerial resumé.
Inter’s appointment is certainly an eyebrow-raiser, given they were strongly linked with the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Patrick Vieira, following Simone Inzaghi’s departure in June.
However, Chivu’s willingness to drop everything he had built at Parma in an instant and return to the club that has shaped him, both as a player and a manager, swayed Inter. As his former manager, Jose Mourinho describes, Chivu “loves Inter and Inter loves him”.
Chivu’s penchant for a defensive three throughout his time at the helm of various Inter youth development teams, and then at Parma, makes the transition from Inzaghi a seamless one.
However, this could well be an unrecognisable Inter team, even if the structure doesn’t appear to change all that much on paper.
Inzaghi’s stubbornness rarely, if ever, saw him deviate from the 3-5-2 formation that proved overwhelmingly successful throughout his tenure. It suited both Denzel Dumfries and Federico Dimarco as wide attacking full-backs, while the three in midfield — typically Nico Barella, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Hakan Calhanoglu — formed a potent blend of dogged defensive work, balanced with sprightly technicians.
Inter’s summer business indicates that Chivu may look to transform Inter into a more vertical, unpredictable team — characteristics that underlined his 13 games in charge at Parma.
While Inter were undeniably successful under Inzaghi, his preference for controlled possession and thoughtful build-up play often forced them into dead-ends, or situations where inspiration was needed to unlock a stubborn opponent.
Inter’s desperate pursuit of Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman is evidence of Chivu’s tweaks. A player who can drift between opposition lines, and operate as both a wide player and a roaming striker.
Fans can expect a more fluid Inter team, as Chivu deploys a formation closer to 3-4-2-1. No doubt a small variation on a familiar theme, but it could make Inter far more aggressive when they need to be.
“Sometimes 3-5-2 can turn into 4-2-4 or 4-4-2. We need to be aggressive and know how to disrupt the game. And know how to beat a player. These are important things. We need to win duels; whoever wins duels wins matches.”
Those comments from Chivu reveal his willingness to embrace a transitional Inter. Such was the humiliation that they suffered at the hands of PSG in the Champions League final, that they must adapt to the shift towards explosive, aggressive, ball-winning tactics.
Luis Henrique’s arrival from Marseille, along with Nicola Zalewski from Roma, also signals a potential tweak to the wide positions. The former is a far more attacking option than Dumfries, even if the Dutchman is often their key creative outlet. It allows Chivu to experiment with a true attacking winger, something that was notable absent throughout Inzaghi’s stint.
Inzaghi’s teams lacked individuals who could open static defenses, which is another reason why Lookman’s arrival could prove so important.
How Will Inter Milan Line-Up Under Cristian Chivu?
Chivu is under no illusions that Inter may be entering a period of transition, even if offshore sportsbooks peg them as favorites to reclaim the Scudetto next season.
Inter appear to be moving away from a cycle that delivered plenty of success, but always with the underlying knowledge that it was time-bound. With the limited resources Inzaghi had during transfer windows as a result of the club’s mounting debt, he maximized the careers of players perceived to be ‘past their best’.
The inevitable burnout may have already arrived. Relinquishing a comfortable lead in Serie A, and crumbling in the Champions League final showed they were some way off their previous peak, even if they were competing for important silverware.
Chivu has displayed a willingness to throw the team forward into the future. Inter may have endured a premature exit at the Club World Cup, but Chivu experimented with different personnel, thrust youth players into the spotlight and his teams looked unshackled in fluid formations.
The predicted line-up for the 2025-26 campaign is a prospective look into the future, providing Inter can land their key targets before the start of the season.

It is largely the same as Inzaghi’s teams, bar a few notable changes.
Carlos Augusto at left wing-back could be one of the key talking points heading into the new season. Dimarco looked leggy, short on confidence, and a shadow of his former self at the back end of last season.
He may have his minutes limited this term if he fails to regain form, and Augusto has often stepped up with aplomb, when given the chance. Augusto may also be preferable for Chivu’s system, which prioritizes the wing backs to stay wider than the two roaming attacking midfielders.
Elsewhere, Petar Sucic’s arrival from Dinamo Zagreb has gone somewhat under the radar, but the 23-year-old is an all-action midfielder, and the perfect partner for Nico Barella.
Barella was often forced to do a lot of the defensive work under Inzaghi, even though his greatest strength is ball carrying through midfield and threading passes in-between opposition lines.
Sucic will help free up Barella’s role as the main creative outlet.
