Destiny Udogie Injury Worse Than Expected As Italian Misses Training Ahead Of European Tie

Destiny Udogie has been handed a date for his return from injury as the Italian is set to miss MD6 of the Champions League.

Tottenham Hotspur will be without their star full-back on December 9th, as Destiny Udogie has been ruled out for the European clash against Slavia Prague following a ‘soft tissue injury’.
The Azzurri international picked up this injury during the Lilywhites’ 2-2 stalemate with Newcastle on December 12th and was absent during Spurs’ 2-0 win over Brentford four-days later.
Initially, the 23-year-old was expected to return to the starting lineup against Slavia Prague, however the Italian did not take part in the latest training session.
The 2025/26 season has been a difficult period for Udogie so far, suffering a traumatic event in London during September and Thomas Frank has revealed how long he expects the Italian to be out for.
Frank said: “Not too long. He got a soft tissue injury, unfortunately, against Newcastle.”
Injuries have been a huge concern for Udogie this season, missing four Premier League matches with a repeated knee injury and this latest knock will send warning signings to Azzurri boss, Gennaro Gattuso.
Gennaro Gattuso Hesitant Over Udogie
Udogie has picked-up 12 caps for the Italian national team during his career, but is yet to play a single minute under Gattuso since his appointment in June.
The Tottenham defender was selected for Italy’s World Cup qualifiers against Estonia and Israel in October, being utilized as an unused substitute for both clashes.
Gattuso has not been convinced by Udogie’s recent performances, preferring the likes of Federico Dimarco and Andrea Cambiaso at full-back.
Riccardo Calafiori, who is also a doubt for the upcoming Champions League fixtures, has stated a claim to play in the left-back position after a strong run with Arsenal.
The Italian national team failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after finishing second in their group and will face Northern Ireland in the playoff semi-finals on March 26th.
Udogie will be fighting to be involved in this crucial fixture but the Spurs defender’s recent injury has placed further doubts into the mind of Gattuso and the 23-year-old may miss out once again.
