Evan Ferguson “Hopes” to Score at Least 20 Goals in Serie A
Roma emerged as surprise candidates to sign Brighton’s Evan Ferguson this summer, who had long been touted for a move within the Premier League.
The Irishman’s powers may have waned somewhat since a breakout season two years ago, which can be attributed to a career-altering cruciate ligament tear in 2023-24, before missing seven games last term with a knee problem.
Nevertheless, he still represents potential in abundance at the tender age of 20-years-old, and his availability this summer once again pricked the ears of Europe’s elite.
Roma pushed hardest for his signature, even with offshore sportsbooks previously moving him to odds-on for a switch within the Premier League. Ferguson also recently revealed former manager, Roberto De Zerbi, tried to lure him to Marseille this summer.
Speaking to the Italian press, Ferguson also continued by revealing his ambitions for the coming season.
He said: “I don’t usually think about an exact number of goals. I definitely want to score in every game, even though I know it’s not easy. 20 goals? Let’s hope…”
Ferguson has endured a difficult fall from grace after netting 16 goals as an 18-year-old, two seasons ago. His market value has plummeted from a high of nearly $100 million in 2023, to just $30m at the time of writing.
Could Evan Ferguson Be Among Serie A Top Scorers in 2025-26?
Ferguson could not have found a more suitable manager to help resuscitate his stuttering career.
Gian Piero Gasperini heads to the capital after nearly a decade at Atalanta, where he earned a reputation for reigniting the careers of players down on their luck.
He transformed Ademola Lookman, who has submitted a transfer request to push through a move to Inter Milan, from a player who had never scored more than six goals in a season, to one of Europe’s most potent attackers.
Gasperini is masterful at developing young players too, so Ferguson certainly finds himself in an ideal spot. Roma also placed a buy option on his initial loan deal, so they clearly want to develop him into the striker to lead their attack in the future.
Roma still managed to finish fifth last season, despite scoring the second-least goals in Serie A’s top-half. It is easy to imagine the team thriving with an attaching fulcrum such as Ferguson, who should relish the service from the likes of Matias Soule and Alexis Saelemaekers.
The latest Serie A top scorer odds suggest it will take considerable effort from Ferguson to surpass the likes of Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku, but his 20-goal target is not inconceivable.
