Fabio Capello made his feelings known about Milan’s lacklustre performance in the Coppa Italia final against Bologna.
The Rossoneri labored to a 1-0 defeat at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday evening. Dan Ndoye scored the only goal of the game after 53 minutes.
That solitary strike earned the Rossoblu their first major title in 51 years. Shortly after the game, club CEO Claudio Fenucci said that head coach Vincenzo Italiano is set to be offered a new deal at the Dall’Ara.
His counterpart Sergio Conceicao is being widely tipped to leave the San Siro this summer. The Coppa Italia loss highlighted just how underwhelming the Diavolo have been in 2024-25.
Although Conceicao win the Supercoppa Italiana in January, Milan’s Serie A form has been extremely disappointing. And former Rossoneri boss Capello was quick to blast his old club’s showing in the finale.
Fabio Capello On Milan’s Coppa Italia Final Performance
“Milan’s performances left a lot to be desired. What about Sergio Conceicao’s team? Other than a few ideas from Rafa Leao in the first half, the Rossoneri did nothing, zero,” Capello wrote in his La Gazzetta dello Sport column.
“Milan had one real chance. At the beginning with that exchange between Beukema, Skorupski and Jovic. Then practically nothing.”
Capello then went on to explain about how Milan head coach Sergio Conceicao introduced substitute Samuel Chukwueze too late into the game.
“Conceicao tried to put as many forwards on the pitch as possible when he went behind, but Italiano learned the lesson of the finals he lost at the helm of Fiorentina and closed the gaps in defence, giving very little to the opponent.
“Leao aside, the only blows came from Chukwueze at the end (Might he have entered earlier, in hindsight?). It was too little in a final that came after an overwhelmingly disappointing season.”
Fabio Capello Says That Bologna Deserved To Win The Coppa Italia Final
Fabio Capello also wrote about how Bologna were the rightful champions. However, he wasn’t overly impressed by the game itself.
“Bologna deserved the cup, even if the match in Rome was not a good advert for Italian football if I’m being honest. I didn’t like the match.
“The Rossoblu found the winner through Dan Ndoye, an important and generous player, but they entertained me more at other stages of the season. That’s okay, everything becomes more complicated in a final.
“But Bologna scored their goal, even without creating too much, and then defended it well.”
