Gian Piero Gasperini was critical of VAR, despite his Atalanta side beating Milan 2-1 to progress in the Coppa Italia. A brace from Teun Koopmeiners was enough to see La Dea progress to the semi-finals of the competition, eliminating the Rossoneri in what proved to be a contentious refereeing performance. Gasperini highlighted the issues in his post-match, questioning who was actually in charge of the game and the response of referee Di Bello:
“There is little to say about the episode of my sending off, VAR is an extraordinary means but here it is becoming a war. You don’t understand who is refereeing anymore, it’s a big problem.
“I asked the referee to go to the monitor. Di Bello is very rude, but I always forget everything. Before the game he didn’t even say hello to me, he doesn’t have to, but he’s very rude.
“There’s a big case against Atalanta, but I always cancel everything and for me they can all come to referee us, I’ve never made any requests.”
