How Long Is Gianluca Scamacca Out For As Italy Star Forced To Leave Azzurri Squad?

The latest Gianluca Scamacca injury update has confirmed the Atalanta forward has withdrawn from the Italy camp ahead of Friday’s clash against Estonia. 

New head coach Gennaro Gattuso will make his international bow as CT in the vital World Cup qualifier in Bergamo on September 5.

Gattuso will go into the match – and Monday’s ‘away’ game against Israel – without the La Dea forward who left the squad on Thursday.

Gianluca Scamacca Injury Update

Although our Italy predicted lineup vs Estonia didn’t include Gianluca Scamacca in the starting XI, news of his withdrawal is still a blow for player and country.

Scamacca has endured a torrid time with injuries over the last 12 months. In August 2024, the Atalanta striker suffered a ruptured ACL in a pre-season fixture.

Amazingly, Scamacca returned to the field in January 2025. However, just one month later the Azzurri international suffered a torn hamstring which required surgery.

He had only just recovered from that during the summer. Although just two games into the 2025-26 campaign, Scamacca has featured in both Serie A games and scored one goal.

How Long Will Gianluca Scamacca Be Out For?

At this stage, it’s not known how long Gianluca Scamacca will be out for. His withdrawal from the Italy camp appears to be more precautionary.

Scamacca has missed training owing to feeling discomfort in his knee. The same knee where he ruptured his ACL 12 months ago. It’s expected he will report back to Atalanta to be assessed by the club’s doctors and medical staff.

Assuming he is given the all clear, Scamacca will be available for La Dea’s clash against Lecce on September 14. If a deeper problem is found, Scamacca could be on the treatment table for 2-4 weeks.

It really is a waiting game but it’s likely that the forward will be informed to rest up for the next few days to help ease the pressure and pain he is feeling.

Will Francesco Pio Esposito Make His Italy Debut?

With the Italy fixtures pitting the Azzurri against Estonia and Israel in the coming days, Francesco Pio Esposito has a better chance of making his debut now Gianluca Scamacca has withdrawn.

The Inter sensation is one of three newbies in the squad alongside Giovanni Fabbian and Giovanni Leoni. There is plenty of excitement around Pio Esposito who has impressed for the Nerazzurri and during his loan spell with Spezia.

Fiorentina star Moise Kean is expected to lead the line but Pio Esposito will surely be given his senior international bow in Bergamo on Friday.

Even if it’s a ten minute run-out towards the end of the game. As unfortunate as Scamacca’s injury is, it’s pushed Pio Esposito up the pecking order.
