Despite enjoying perhaps his best individual campaign at PSG last season, Gianluigi Donnarumma has been cast aside in favor of Lucas Chevalier. Wide spread reports indicate Premier League clubs have been alerted to his situation, but a romantic return to the club where it all began could also emerge.

Is Gianluigi Donnarumma Leaving PSG?

The future of Gianluigi Donnarumma at PSG appears bleak.

The Parisians fought hard to sign 23-year-old Lucas Chevalier from Lille this month, splashing an initial $47 million in a deal that could rise to well over $60m with add-ons.

That is an important fee for a goalkeeper, and Chevalier has no doubt been given assurances that he will be PSG’s starting goalkeeper next season.

That very fact has raised eyebrows across Europe, with their incumbent number one, Donnarumma, consistently proving himself to be one of the finest goalkeepers in the world.

Off the back of a staggering treble-winning campaign, in which he was instrumental, it is easy to imagine the Italian feels somewhat hard done by as Paris seek to replace him.

The 26-year-old’s contract is due to expire next summer, and initial talks over a new deal have stalled.

Eager to avoid a situation where they allow him to leave for free, Paris have now essentially forced his hand after the capture of Ligue 1 Goalkeeper of the Year Chevalier.

Donnarumma has since been left out of PSG’s squad for the UEFA Super Cup against Tottenham, and reports suggest he is even being axed from training with the rest of the first team.

Donnarumma Back to AC Milan?

AC Milan had been prepared to sanction the sale of goalkeeper Mike Maignan earlier this summer, right up until a deal with Chelsea collapsed over a dispute with the final fee.

The Premier League club have not returned with an improved bid since, but reports suggest they are alerted to Donnarumma’s situation, alongside Manchester United.

However, FootItalia understands Donnarumma has a preference to return to his native Italy, if he is to leave this summer.

A Donnarumma return to AC Milan was not ruled out by his agent Enzo Raiola in July, but the possibility of him actually leaving the French capital has accelerated.

A fee in the region of $35 million would be enough to secure his services, although Milan would prefer to sell Maignan first, in order to bring back Donnarumma.

It would be a romantic, full circle moment for Italy’s number one, who join the Rossoneri aged 14 before making his senior debut at 16.

Premier League clubs are in pole position for Donnarumma’s signature according to offshore sportsbooks, but Milan intend to contact the player’s agent to gauge his own interest in the deal.

Although there have been no further developments since Maignan’s collapsed Chelsea transfer, Milan remain open to the Frenchman leaving.

FootItalia sources claim Milan have long dreamt about bringing Donnarumma back to the club, and they see PSG’s asking price as relatively modest, given his age and reputation.
