Inter Aim Subtle Social Media Dig At Real Madrid After Remarkable UCL Comeback Against Barcelona

Start

The official Inter Milan Twitter account (now X) couldn’t resist poking fun at Real Madrid after the Italians progressed to the Champions League final on Tuesday.

An astonishing night at the San Siro saw the Nerazzurri edge past Los Blancos’ biggest rivals in a swashbuckling affair. Simone Inzaghi’s men got the better of Barcelona 7-6 on aggregate after an absorbing two-legged semi-final encounter.

The first tie in Spain ended 3-3 and the second game also finished by exactly the same scoreline after 90 minutes. Extra-time ensued where Davide Frattesi sent the CBS studio into fits of laughter after he described his winning goal in the amazing 4-3 comeback victory.

At the full time whistle, the Inter players and supporters wildly celebrated their famous victory which will live forever in Nerazzurri folklore.

It’s the second time in three seasons that Inzaghi has led his side to the finale. In 2023, Inter narrowly lost 1-0 to English Premier League club Manchester City.

24 months on, the Italian head coach will be hoping to go one better. He’ll face either PSG or Arsenal in Munich on May 31.

Inter Milan Twitter Account Aims Dig At Real Madrid

Unsurprisingly, the Inter Milan Twitter account delivered a number of joyful posts once their victory over Barcelona was confirmed.

Much of the content was centred around their heroic comeback. A number of posts also congratulated the efforts of the players and head coach Simone Inzaghi.

However, there was one upload which aimed a subtle dig at Barcelona’s biggest rivals Real Madrid. Although the clubs never met in the UCL this season, the Inter admin hadn’t forgotten a tweet Los Blancos posted ahead of their quarter-final second lag clash against Arsenal.

Madrid tried to toy with the Gunners by suggesting ‘90 minutes at the Bernabeu is a long time.’ That was in relation to Mikel Arteta’s side taking a 3-0 lead to the Spanish capital.

In the end, the ploy failed to work. Goals from Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Mertinelli helped Arsenal to a 2-1 win (5-1 on aggregate).

From Inter’s perspective, they delivered a similar post which simply read ‘120 minutes at San Siro seem very long.’ If you go back to the 1980s, Real coined the phrase when 2-0 down to the Nerazzurri in a 1984/85 UEFA Cup tie.

The Spaniards went on to win the second leg 3-0 and complete a fine 3-2 aggregate win. The following season, history repeated itself when Real overturned another first leg loss to Inter.

The tongue-in-cheek post was certainly lighthearted and not meant to cause direct offence. However, if the two clubs meet in the UCL next season – Madrid are likely to respond.
