Inter Milan have been forced to call-up two youth players amid their ongoing goalkeeper crisis at the San Siro.

The Nerazzurri face Fiorentina on matchday 9 whereby FootItalia’s Serie A predictions have forecast a 2-1 victory for Cristian Chivu’s men.

Wednesday’s fixture will see a number of changes to the roster. Yann Sommer is the only senior shot-stopper who is available for selection against La Viola.

Inter Milan Goalkeeper Crisis

After the tragic Josep Martinez car crash, Inter Milan has had to take the unusual step of naming two young hopefuls in their squad against Fiorentina.

Martinez isn’t available for selection owing to compassionate grounds. The Spaniard will not return to training until at least next week.

Fellow back-up goalkeeper Raffaele Di Gennaro is recovering from a broken wrist. The 32-year-old isn’t likely to be back in contention until at least December.

Therefore, Cristian Chivu has drafted in Alessandro Calligaris and Alain Taho. The former typically plays for the Under 23 side in Serie C. However, he has been in the senior squad since Di Gennaro’s injury.

As for Taho, the 18-year-old Albanian youth star has never previously been named in the senior roster. He normally features for the Inter Primavera side.

When Will Josep Martinez Play Again?

At this stage, it’s unclear when Josep Martinez will be available for Inter Milan. The former Genoa goalkeeper is accustomed to playing second fiddle to Yann Sommer.

Martinez has made two Serie A appearances this season and 12 overall in all competitions since signing last summer. He featured in back-to-back fixtures last month against Sassuolo and Cagliari. Keeping one clean sheet in the process.

However, after the tragic road traffic collision which saw an 81-year-old man lose his life, Martinez has been given the rest of the week off. The hugely traumatizing and emotional incident means he may not return to the first-team fold for some time.

Inter will continue to support Martinez after he crashed into Paolo Saibene’s motorized cart on the way to training on October 28.

The club has already provided Martinez a psychologist to aid in the Spaniard’s recovery. For now though, it’s too early to predict when the Nerazzurri backup goalie will be available.
