Inter Milan icon, Javier Zanetti, has made a stunning statement about Lautaro Martinez and the Argentine gave his thoughts on Cristian Chivu’s appointment.

What Did Javier Zanetti Say About Lautaro Martinez?

Lautaro Martinez has been the spear-head of Inter Milan’s attack for multiple years now, contributing to 201 goals in 331 appearances for the Serie A side (151G + 51A).

During this time, the Argentinian has won two Serie A titles, two Coppa Italia trophies and clinched the World Cup with his national side during the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

His 2024/25 campaign was relatively strong on an individual basis, scoring 22 goals across all competitions but Inter failed to win the league and were beaten 5-0 by PSG in the Champions League final.

Despite this poor result, which was put down to arrogance by Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi, Lautaro Martinez is still lauded by Inter supporters and has been publicly acknowledged by former Inter Milan star, Javier Zanetti.

The soccer icon is the definition of a one-club man, making 858 appearances for the Italian side and winning five Serie A titles, the Champions four Coppa Italias and the Champions League.

Zanetti was a part of the 2009/10 treble-winning side and is one of the most notable names in Inter Milan history, which is why his statement over Lautaro Martinez holds so much weight.

In a recent interview, Zanetti was asked to give his thoughts on the prolific striker and the 51-year-old described Martinez as ‘one of the most important players’ in the clubs’ history.

Zanetti said: “Martinez is one of the most important players in Inter’s history, I would definitely put him amongst the greatest.”

When you look into the rich history of Inter Milan, this level of praise cannot be understated as the likes of Ronaldo, Diego Milito, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Samuel Eto’o have all donned the jersey.

Martinez is yet to achieve European glory with Inter, however, his deal in Milan does not expire until June 2029, meaning he has plenty of time to bring European silverware to the San Siro.

What Did Javier Zanetti Say About Cristian Chivu Becoming Inter Manager?

Inter Milan have made some huge changes to their structure in recent weeks, as Simone Inzaghi left his post as manager to become the new head coach at Saudi Pro League side, Al Hilal.

The Serie A side acted swiftly in finding a replacement, as Cristian Chivu was appointed and will take the reins for the upcoming 2025/26 campaign.

There will be huge expectancy for Chivu going into next season, as Inter have already been priced as favorites to win the league title next season on Serie A betting sites.

Chivu played for Inter between 2007-2013 and picked up multiple league titles, Coppa Italias and was also a part of the 2009/10 treble-winning side alongside Javier Zanetti.

Zanetti and Chivu played over 150 games together during their time in Milan and Zanetti commented on Inter Milan’s decision to hire the Romanian.

Zanetti saidL “We have great faith in Cristian, I know him very well. He was my teammate so I know he is an extraordinary person and I am sure he will do a great job.”

Another former Inter star will also be on the coaching staff next season, with the Italian sides hiring Walter Samuel as an assistant coach to work alongside Chivu.
