Pundits Torn On Inter Star Lautaro Martinez Amid Kylian Mbappe Comparisons

Inter captain Lautaro Martinez is being talked up as one of Europe’s elite forwards as Ciro Ferrara compared him to the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.

Martinez scored in Inter’s 2-1 win away at Genoa, taking his Serie A tally to eight goals and three assists.

Lautaro is one of just four players with 10 or more goal contributions across Europe’s top five leagues this season.

Mbappe, Kane and Erling Haaland are the other three, leading to Ferrara’s comments about Martinez’s credentials.

Ferrara, speaking on DAZN, said he does not place Martinez’ in a lower bracket to the others, stressing context matters but numbers speak loudly.

“I don’t put him a step below the others, but at the same level,” said the former Napoli and Juventus star. “Absolutely.

“It’s clear that the context of the various teams must also be taken into consideration.

“But the numbers speak for themselves and this player is achieving significant statistics.

“That’s why I put him among the absolute top.”

Disagreements over Ciro Ferrara’s assessment of Lautaro Martinez

Cristian Brocchi praised Martinez’s all-round play and leadership, but ranked him just under the stellar trio’s Champions League impact.

“He’s a player I really like because he participates in the game, he’s a leader and a wonderful footballer,” said Brocchi.

“But I would put him just below the other three, who have been influential for a long time also in the Champions League.

“They’ve scored important goals and continue to have a specific weight in their teams. But we’re talking about a race between top players.”

Luca Toni agreed, saying the others are making history at Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Manchester City.

“I see Lautaro slightly below because he still has to shift the balance like Mbappe, Haaland and Kane have already done,” said Toni.

With Cristian Chivu building his new Inter around their captain, Martinez’s output is strengthening the case that he belongs in football’s top bracket.

Are Inter at risk of losing Lautaro Martinez in 2026?

When a player excels for their club, there is always the risk of other elite clubs wanting to snap them up.

For instance, Barcelona are eyeing Martinez, according to reports.

The La Liga champions have been long-term admirers of the World Cup winner. They are reportedly keen to get him in their roster for 2026-27.

However, Martinez himself has made it clear he wants a long-term Inter stay.

“I work for myself, for Inter, and for my family. So I let those outside that group talk all they want,” he recently said.

“I’m happy for the team, for my family, and for myself. I work for Inter and that’s all.

“I hope (to stay) for a long time, I have many years on my contract and people love me here.

“The team comes first of all, Inter must win, we’ve been challenging for every trophy for many years now.

“People outside can talk, but we must focus on lifting Inter as high as possible.”
