La Gazzetta dello Sport claim that Inter Milan will sack coach Simone Inzaghi if they are knocked out of the Champions League quarter-finals by Benfica. The Nerazzurri hold a 2-0 lead from the first leg in Lisbon, but their league form has caused serious concerns about the course of their season, give they now sit in 5th place.
A run of five Serie matches without a win was capped off by yet another defeat yesterday, this time at the hands of Monza, who took a late lead in the 78th minute, despite Inter dominating the match for large periods.
La Gazzetta claim this is almost the last straw for the Nerazzurri management and that Inzaghi’s future at the club is hanging by a string, having gone over a month without a win in the league, losing five Serie A matches and drawing the other one.
The suggestion is that if Inter are eliminated from this seasons Champions League tournament, the coach will be fired immediately. Inter are being linked with a number of replacements already this season, ranging from Porto’s Sérgio Conceição, to Bologna’s Thiago Motta, as well Brighton coach Roberto De Zerbi.
Inzaghi’s potential firing could kickstart what Gazzetta refer to as a ‘revolution’ at the club, with an overhaul of the squad also expected, as well as the potential sale of their more valuable assets.
Inter currently site 10 points behind Lazio who are in second spot, and 24 points off league leaders Napoli, who are only weeks away from securing a first Serie A title in almost 35 years.
