Inter manager Simone Inzaghi says his players deserve a big round of applause for their progression to the last sixteen of the Champions League. The Nerazzurri were drawn in the so-called ‘group of death’ with Bayern and Barcelona and were outsiders behind the La Liga and Bundesliga giants. Victory over Barcelona and a 3-3 draw at the Camp Nou meant they needed just a draw against Viktoria Plzn to progress.
Speaking to Amazon Prime Italia after their 4-0 victory over the Czech side, Inzaghi spoke about his players and how important the success was:
We hoped! We knew it was a very tough group, we went beyond expectations and these players deserve a big round of applause.
We needed to do something special to achieve this first target we had set for the season. We grew game by game and the two meetings with Barcelona really boosted our self-confidence. We are happy for everyone around Inter.
Calhanoglu? He is a player who unites quality and quantity. I had put him there a few times last season too, and I don’t forget Kristjan Asllani who is giving the team a big hand. Hakan is improving all the time.
We got Lukaku and Roberto Gagliardini back today, we hope to have Brozovic return within a few days. With so many games close together, it’s only good for a coach to have options.”
