Italy have called up Juventus defender Federico Gatti, following Giorgio Scalvini’s cruciate ligament injury. Atalanta centre-back Scalvini will miss this summer’s Euros and might not return until 2025, having picked up the injury during Atalanta’s 3-2 defeat against Fiorentina.
Italy have now confirmed that Gatti has been called up in his place, having already been on standby following Francesco Acerbi’s withdrawal from the team through injury.
Previous Italy coach Roberto Mancini called up Gatti for a three-day training camp in Coverciano in May 2022. His Azzurri debut came on 11 June, when he was chosen as a starter in a UEFA Nations League match against England, with the match ending 0–0, and Gatti considered to have played like “a veteran” by Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera in the post-match report.
