Juventus Battle With Atletico Madrid Over Nicolas Gonzalez Clause
Nicolas Gonzalez's career in Spain may take an interesting turn next year.
Juventus have been left frustrated as Atletico Madrid are considering various loopholes to avoid signing Nicolas Gonzalez permanently.
Atletico Madrid Cautious Over Nicolas Gonzalez
Nicolas Gonzalez has become a household name during his opening stages with Atletico Madrid, making 15 starts across all competitions and winning the trust of Diego Simeone.
The Argentine moved to Spain on a temporary basis from Juventus in the summer transfer window, but this deal included a permanent buy-option.
Although Gonzalez’s performances have impressed Simeone, the Atletico Madrid board are becoming increasingly concerned over the Argentine’s involvement.
If Gonzalez plays at least 45 minutes in 10 more LaLiga matches then the Spanish side will have to pay Juve €32million and this could have some major financial implications.
Atletico had a similar event involving Antoine Griezmann, which resulted in the Frenchman coming on in the 60th minute to avoid paying a permanent fee to Barcelona.
Juventus are reportedly worried that history may repeat itself and Atletico will start to limit Gonzalez’s minutes, despite his recent form.
The Bianconeri are hoping to receive the full transfer fee for Gonzalez as they look to sign Xaver Schlager in January, but Atletico may decide to lower the Argentine’s playing time.
Gonzalez’s deal with Juventus does not expire until June 2029, meaning he would return to Turin at the end of the season and likely be moved on permanently.
Luciano Spalletti has shown no signs of wanting Gonzalez to return and the Juventus manager is keen on selling the Argentine in order to find a move for a Premier League star next summer.
Juventus To Use Gonzalez Funds On Premier League Star
The Bianconeri have made a disappointing start to the season and are looking to add some reinforcements in January to move into the Champions League places.
Multiple players have been linked with a move to Turin, including Marco Palestra and Brooke Norton-Cuffy, however one name stands out higher than the rest.
Sandro Tonali has become a cult hero at Newcastle since signing in July 2023, but rumors have started to circulate about a move back to Serie A.
The Italian has dealt with some injury concerns in recent weeks and teenager Lewis Miley has impressed in Tonali’s absence.
The Magpies have struggled to meet expectations this season, sitting 12th in the table and this has left Tonali questioning his future in England.
Signing Tonali in January is an unlikely option for the Bianconeri as Newcastle would ask for around €85m, but this fee would drop next summer.
