FootItalia revealed Tonali is pushing to return to Serie A and is disappointed with Newcastle United’s performances this season.

According to Tuttomercato, Juventus have pursued the highly-rated Italy international since last summer as a matter of priority. The club, though, would be unable to match his price tag and salary demands.

It is said they would have to stump up a €70million fee and a €7m wage package to reach an agreement.

Tonali is believed to be questioning his future on Tyneside, with a poor display in a 1-0 defeat by arch rivals Sunderland exacerbating his concerns. As a result, a comeback in his homeland is on the cards.

Only a substantial offer would be enough to tempt Newcastle into a sale, while the 25-year-old is under contract until June 2028.

However, Luciano Spalletti could play a crucial role in a future bid. He struck up a strong relationship with the midfielder during his time in charge of the Azzurri, but remains hamstrung by tight finances in Turin.

AC Milan have also been linked with Tonali in recent weeks and could hold the advantage in the transfer tussle.

Tonali made 130 appearances for the Rossoneri between 2020-2023 and won the Serie A title in 2022. He is said to be open to a move back to Milan next summer, but again, a significant transfer offer would be required.

Juventus’ Midfield Targets In January

Juventus have compiled a shortlist of more realistic targets to strengthen Spalletti’s midfield.

Inter Milan’s Davide Frattesi is the club’s ideal candidate, per Tuttomercato. He is pushing to leave the San Siro in January, having tumbled down the pecking order under Cristian Chivu.

A bid in the region of €30m is expected to be enough to wrap up the deal.

Marseille’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg represents a suitable fall-back option and is available for a cut-price €15m fee.

Juventus also hold an interest in RB Leipzig’s Xaver Schlager and Feyenoord’s Quinten Timber.

Resources will be made available to Spalletti as he looks to reinforce his side next month.

Off the pitch, Juventus rejected a Saudi takeover bid despite the mystery group tabling a ‘monstrous’ €2billion package. The Agnelli family and majority owners Exor have no plans to sell their majority stake.
