Genoa are in the market for a new forward this summer, albeit with a preference for an initial loan deal. Reports in Italy suggest they will approach AC Milan for Lorenzo Colombo, after a returning from a loan deal at Empoli last season.
Genoa in the Market For a New Striker
Genoa’s respectable 13th-placed finish in their second season back from promotion has seen them settle comfortably back into life in the top-flight.
It was, however, a slight drop from their 11th-placed finish in 2023-24, where they racked up six more points than they did this season.
Their ability to float around mid-table has been bouyed by a commendable defensive record, which saw them concede the second-least amount of goals in the bottom-half, and the same amount as seventh-placed Lazio.
However, internally Genoa are concerned over the lack of goals scored throughout the campaign. For context, they netted just 37 goals in 38 games; only five teams scored less than them, including the three of the sides who dropped down to Serie B.
Lorenzo Colombo Loan Deal Appeals to Genoa
After Romanian businessman Dan Șucu took control of Italy’s oldest soccer institution last year, the club has moved to bring financial stability back, after uncertainty under the ownership of 777 Partners.
Their rigid financial approach has seen them cut costs wherever possible, particularly to their wage bill, while identifying market opportunities that are kinder on the wallet.
Their transfer business last season saw them report a profit, while they are yet to spend a dime so far this summer.
Albert Gudmundsson, who has already departed, and Honest Ahanor, who is on the verge of a move to Atalanta, mean the new hierarchy are well on their way to another profitable summer.
It appears they are adopting an approach of utilising the loan market once again, having had a total of seven players on temporary deals last season.
In particular, reports in Italy suggest they are hoping to remedy their relative lack of goals with a new striker.
Talks with AC Milan’s Lorenzo Colombo are said to already be underway, with the Rossoneri eager to keep him on the books without stumping his development, amid competition upfront at the San Siro.
Colombo, now 23, enjoyed a solid campaign on loan despite being part of the Empoli squad that faced relegation to Serie B.
He scored six goals and added two assists in a team that only managed 33 goals all season.
The appeal of a dry loan, which Milan are said to be open to, is preferential for Genoa, who are eager to reinforce after losing top scorer Andrea Pinamonti, with his loan from Sassuolo ending.
According to the safest online betting sites, Genoa are predicted to achieve a top-half finish next season.
