Luka Jovic Set To Sign For AEK Athens After Leaving Milan This Summer

Start

According to the latest Luka Jovic transfer news, the former Milan striker is set for a surprise move to the Greek Super League.

Jovic quit the San Siro upon the expiry of his contract earlier this summer. He struggled for game time under former head coach Sergio Conceicao and was omitted from the Champions League roster.

That essentially spelled the end of Jovic’s time as a Rossoneri player. Now, the 27-year-old is on the brink of completing a free transfer to AEK Athens.

Luka Jovic Transfer News

The latest Luka Jovic transfer news has revealed a shock switch to Greece is on the brink of completion. Italian soccer journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Jovic will arrive in Athens on Monday to undergo his medical.

Although he struggled at Milan – who are +600 to win Serie A this season with offshore sportsbooks – Jovic is still very much in his prime at 27.

Spanish outlet Marca had reported that Real Oviedo were also in the running for the Serbian international. However, Romano said a deal with the newly promoted LaLiga side wasn’t close to materializing.

That was mainly due to Jovic preferring the AEK project. He wasn’t at all convinced by Oviedo’s and thus, is heading to Greece to finalize his move. It’s understood Jovic will pen a two-year deal.

What Clubs Has Luka Jovic Played For?

Despite being three years away from turning 30, Luka Jovic has become something of a journeyman. Including loan spells, Jovic has represented a total of seven clubs in his pro soccer career.

AEK Athens will be his eighth. Jovic has played for Red Star Belgrade, Benfica, Benfica B, Frankfurt, Real Madrid, Fiorentina and Milan.

His spell in Germany with Frankfurt was easily the most successful of his career to date. In the 2018-19 campaign, Jovic fired home 27 goals from 48 appearances in all competitions.

That saw Los Blancos acquire his services but Jovic flopped in Spain. In his three seasons in Italy, he scored a total of 26 goals for the Viola and the Rossoneri.

What Happened To Luka Jovic?

That is a question that has been floated by many soccer fans across Europe and America in recent years. Luka Jovic was widely considered as one of soccer’s greatest talents in 2018-19.

A €60m move to Real Madrid demonstrated how highly regarded he was but ultimately, a sharp decline ensued after the mega-money move to Los Blancos.

Jovic himself admitted that he moved to the Bernabeu too soon. Injuries, COVID and Karim Benzema’s stunning form meant opportunities were few and far between in Spain.

That, coupled with the pressure at the world’s biggest club and being 21 meant it didn’t work out. A loan spell back at Frankfurt and the three seasons in Serie A failed to see an upturn in fortunes.

However, a move to AEK Athens could prove the perfect remedy for Jovic to get back to doing what he does best. Scoring goals.
