Controversial Italian Soccer Star Willing To Take Major Career Turn After Attracting Interest Outside Of Europe

Mario Balotelli is willing to take a major turn in his soccer career, as the Italian is open to completing a move to the Australian A-League.

The Italian soccer star is widely-regarded as one of the most controversial players in history, displaying iconic celebrations, refusing to play and even setting fireworks off in his own house before a Manchester Derby.

Most recently, the former Manchester City star was on the books for Serie A side, Genoa, playing under a former teammate in Patrick Vieira – playing together for Inter and the Cityzens.

However, despite their previous rapport on the pitch, the two had a tricky relationship during the 2024/25 season, as Balotelli struggled with injuries and made just six Serie A appearances.

This led to the Italian’s eventual release and Balotelli had some choice words for Vieira following his departure, calling his former manager an ‘attention seeker’.

Ballotelli said: “I would give him advice, and he could’ve listened instead of telling me to get lost. It’s just the desire to be a protagonist in my view, he wants to be at the centre of attention. I can see no other reason. Or I just get on his nerves.”

Genoa kicked off their Serie A campaign with a 1-1 stalemate against Lecce and will face Juvenus in their next league encounter, with Igor Tudor hoping to bring Kolo Muani in beforehand.

Patrick Vieira’s side are managing without Balotelli and the former Inter Milan star is now looking for a new challenge ahead of the 2025/26 season – attracting interest from Australia.

Will Mario Balotelli Move To Australian A-League?

The 35-year-old appears to be done with European soccer, winning three Serie A titles, one Coppa Italia, one Supercoppa Italiana, one UEFA Champions League, one Premier League title and one FA Cup.

His most prolific days came in Serie A, making 147 appearances in Italy’s top division and scoring 52 goals, but failing to win the Serie A golden boot.

Now, the former Manchester City star is looking to begin a fresh challenge away from Europe and has recently commented on the possibility of completing a move to Australia.

Interestingly, Balotelli highlighted his former international teammate, Alessandro Diamanti, as an inspiration to join the Australian A-league this summer.

Balotelli said: “It would be a new experience for me. Absolutely my door is open if clubs want to speak to me about coming to Australia.

“It was interesting to hear about it from Diamanti. I would see it as an exciting opportunity for me if I could play in Australia. And besides football, Australia would also be a wonderful country to live in.”

Many star names have competed in the A-League, most recently Juan Mata made the move and former Australian international, who now acts as Sporting Director at Perth Glory, Stan Lazaridis, believes Balotelli’s arrival would be a huge move the league.

Stan Lazaridis said: “He would be great for us and the A-League. It’s a big thing to get a player of that calibre here but it’s been done before in the A-League with the likes of Alessandro Del Piero and Dwight Yorke. It’s maybe a long shot, but we are interested.”
