Roma are eyeing a summer move for Brighton midfielder Matt O’Riley, but the Giallorossi’s hands are currently tied due to Financial Fair Play restrictions.
According to Corriere dello Sport, the Danish international has given the green light to discuss terms with the Serie A club, but a deal hinges on Roma generating capital gains before June 30.
Is Matt O’Riley Leaving Brigthon?
O’Riley, 24, reportedly gave his availability to negotiate with Roma following initial contact. The former Celtic star joined Brighton in 2024, but injuries disrupted his debut Premier League season. After ankle surgery in September, he only returned in November and made just one full 90-minute appearance in the league.
Despite those setbacks, his technical ability and tactical versatility remain attractive qualities — especially to Roma’s new coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who was also interested in bringing O’Riley to Atalanta last summer.
The London-born midfielder has recently drawn interest from Napoli, who were reported to have made a €30 million bid for him.
Brighton haven’t commented on O’Riley’s situation, and sources in England suggest the club remains open to discussions but is not actively pushing a sale.
With sporting director Ricky Massara now leading Roma’s market activity, the Italian side may look to capitalize on O’Riley’s limited minutes last season and Brighton’s crowded midfield.
Still under contract and having played an important role in Brighton’s final eight games of the season, O’Riley won’t be an easy signing — unless the price is right.
Roma FFP Situation
Roma are currently prioritizing player sales to avoid further FFP sanctions. With a target of around €50 million in outgoing transfers by the end of June, the club has already begun raising funds.
Monday’s confirmed €6.5 million sale of Nicola Zalewski to Inter was a first step, but more sales will be needed before Roma can make concrete moves in the market.
According to Corriere dello Sport, Roma are expected to turn their full attention to incoming transfers in early July — once the FFP window closes. Until then, negotiations with O’Riley will remain on hold.
Could a January Move Be More Realistic?
Given the tight timing and financial pressure surrounding Roma’s summer window, a deal for O’Riley may not materialize until January. That could give the player time to establish himself more firmly at Brighton or reignite interest from elsewhere in Serie A.
For now, Roma remain admirers — and O’Riley remains on standby.
