Aston Villa’s pursuit of Atletico Madrid left-back Matteo Ruggeri has reached its final stage.

The Italy international has agreed personal terms with Villa and is set to fly out for a medical this week, pending paperwork.

A deal with Atletico Madrid is in place worth €25m fixed, plus a further €1.5m in add-ons, taking the total package to around €26.5m.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed the move with his trademark “here we go,” calling it done business between the two clubs and the player.

Ruggeri’s Aston Villa Fee Rises To €26.5m

The numbers have shifted over the past week.

Earlier reports had the structure closer to €18m guaranteed with €6m in add-ons, a package worth up to €24m.

That figure has since been overtaken by developments on the ground.

The finalised terms now sit at €25m plus €1.5m in bonuses, a modest but meaningful increase on where talks stood only days ago.

For Atletico, it represents a healthy return. Ruggeri arrived from Atalanta just twelve months ago for €17m plus add-ons.

Why Villa Needed A Left-Back After Digne

The move fills a gap that opened when Lucas Digne left for Paris Saint-Germain, who triggered his release clause earlier in the summer.

Unai Emery had been searching for a long-term successor ever since.

Pervis Estupinan was previously in the frame, but Villa’s focus shifted decisively toward Ruggeri as the market developed.

Ian Maatsen remained Villa’s only recognised option on the left in the meantime, which made the position an urgent priority heading into the new season.

Matteo Ruggeri’s Profile And What He Offers Villa

At 24 years old and 6ft 2in, Ruggeri gives Villa the physical profile Emery had been targeting at left-back.

He is a Europa League winner and has represented Italy at youth and Under-21 level, though a senior cap has so far eluded him.

His underlying numbers point to a defender who thrives out of possession. Ruggeri averaged close to five recoveries per 90 minutes last season, a notably higher rate than Digne managed in the same period.

His attacking return was more modest, with three assists across 1,755 league minutes compared to Digne’s six in slightly more game time.

Duel success is the clearer area for development. Ruggeri won 44.2 percent of his individual battles last term, some way below Digne’s 55.4 percent, and it’s the number most likely to be tested early in the Premier League.

Ruggeri Becomes Villa’s Fifth Summer Signing

The move continues a busy window for Villa, who have already brought in Johan Manzambi, Joao Gomes, Alejandro Garnacho and Modou Keba Cissé.

Ruggeri now completes that group as Villa’s fifth arrival of the summer.

With the transfer window entering its final weeks, Villa have moved quickly to close out one of their most pressing needs before the season picks up pace.

Emery’s focus is now expected to shift toward midfield reinforcements, with Villa’s squad already shaped significantly differently to the one that finished last season.
