Tensions between Sarri and Lazio have lingered over recent months, as reported by FootItalia.

Indeed, the awkward fracture began after the Laziali were hit with a transfer ban in March 2025, with Sarri alleging he had not been aware of the perilous financial situation.

The risk of the Italian quitting has steadily risen, despite his public promise to supporters that he would stay.

According to Il Messaggero, the potential sale of Romagnoli would be his final straw. The 67-year-old believes the experienced defender is untouchable, and as such, has drawn a clear line in the sand.

Romagnoli is unhappy at the club, particularly with the treatment he has received from the hierarchy.

Outspoken president Claudio Lotito is said to have still not fulfilled a promise made in 2022 that the centre-back would be given a pay rise if Lazio qualified for the Champions League.

Despite him helping to lead them to second in Serie A in 2022-23, he has not received the bonus.

As a result, Romagnoli’s camp have become impatient and offered the 31-year-old to Qatari side Al-Sadd, currently managed by former Azzurri head coach Roberto Mancini.

Lazio are yet to make the crucial call to his entourage, despite Sarri’s threat to resign with immediate effect.

Sarri hopes Romagnoli, who has been at the club since 2022 and made 143 appearances, will be offered a new one-year contract. He is the highest-paid player on the books, banking a reported €5.5million per year.

Sarri had criticised Lazio’s hierarchy while addressing the Italian outfit’s lack of ambition in the transfer window.

He also lamented Matteo Guendouzi’s departure and admitted he knew little about new signings Petar Ratkov and Kenneth Taylor, despite the reported €30m outlay on both players.

These remarks were not well received by Lotito, potentially spelling the end of Sarri’s time in Rome.

This comes despite his vow to continue fighting, regardless of the boardroom friction.

“I said at the start of the season that I would stay here at all costs and put up with everything,” said Sarri. “Well, I’ve had to deal with more than I expected.

“The only thing that hurts me is that we have such marvellous supporters. I think it’s going to be really tough to give them some joy, and that weighs on me.”
