Samuel Mbangula is heading to the Bundesliga, with Juventus agreeing a transfer fee worth up to €13 million with Werder Bremen for the Belgian winger.
The deal provides the Bianconeri with a solid capital gain for a player who cost them next to nothing when he joined their academy in 2020.
Mbangula Werder Bremen Transfer
The deal for Mbangula is an initial €10 million transfer fee plus €3 million in potential bonuses.
Mbangula has agreed a five-year contract with the German club, keeping him at the Weserstadion until the summer of 2030.
The move represents one of Werder Bremen’s most expensive signings in recent history and offers the player a chance to really kickstart his career after a stop-start season in Turin.
The Belgian youth international made headlines on his Serie A debut last August, scoring just 23 minutes into Juventus’ opener against Como. But after an early run of form under Thiago Motta, his minutes dwindled, especially following the arrival of Igor Tudor.
Why Are Juventus Selling Mbangula?
Mbangula was seen as a breakout talent in the early weeks of the 2024/25 season, handed surprise starts by Motta and initially making good on his manager’s trust. His goal against Como felt like the start of a major breakthrough.
But inconsistency and managerial changes quickly changed his trajectory at the club. By the time the Club World Cup came around, he didn’t feature at all — not even in the squad for the final group game against Manchester City.
Tudor’s system, which doesn’t involve natural wingers, made it challenging for Mbangula to find minutes.
He finished the season with 32 appearances in all competitions, 11 starts, 3 goals, and 3 assists, totaling just under 1,100 minutes.
While he showed flashes of quality, Juventus clearly felt it was the right moment to move on — especially with more tactical changes ahead and a squad overhaul in progress.
The sale also gives Juventus added financial flexibility, with proceeds from the Mbangula and Nico Gonzalez exits expected to fund a move for Jadon Sancho.
Bargain for Bremen? Why the Bundesliga Move Makes Sense
From Bremen’s point of view, this is a calculated risk that could well pay off. Mbangula’s market value is estimated at €14 million (via Transfermarkt), and they’ve secured him for a base fee below that. He will become the second-most valuable player in their squad, behind only Romano Schmid.
The German club has been hit with several injury setbacks in pre-season, including Marvin Ducksch and Mitchell Weiser, prompting an aggressive push to secure attacking reinforcements. New head coach Horst Steffen is said to be a strong supporter of Mbangula’s signing.
His versatility is another key asset — Mbangula can play on either wing, as a second striker, or even as a No. 10. That tactical flexibility should be a valuable asset in the Bundesliga, especially for a side that doesn’t have the depth of Germany’s bigger clubs.
Could Juventus Regret Selling Mbangula?
This deal follows a similar pattern to Juventus’ strategy last summer, when they offloaded multiple Next Gen graduates for profit. However, the decision to sell a 21-year-old with raw talent and top-level experience is not without risk.
Juventus turned down a move to the Premier League earlier this year, rejecting a joint offer from Nottingham Forest for Mbangula and Timothy Weah. That deal, believed to be worth €23 million, collapsed — and now, the Belgian departs on his own.
There’s a growing concern among some fans that Juventus could live to regret this one if Mbangula flourishes in Germany. But for now, the club is focused on streamlining the squad and reinvesting strategically under Tudor.
