Lazio Prepare Last Minute Move For MLS Superstar As Maurizio Sarri Looks To Reignite Laziali Spark
Another MLS star could be heading to Serie A as Lazio pursue Seattle Sounders ace Obed Vargas.
Lazio are preparing a last-minute move for MLS superstar Obed Vargas, as the Seattle Sounders player looks to make a Serie A switch.
Obed Vargas Pushes For Serie A Switch
Maurizio Sarri is hoping to reignite a spark in the Lazio squad, as the Serie A side prepare a late bid for Seattle Sounders midfielder Obed Vargas.
The 20-year-old is fresh off a superb season in Major League Soccer, making 26 appearances in the regular season before playing every minute in the playoff stages.
Vargas scored two goals in three playoff appearances despite Seattle’s penalty-shootout defeat by Minnesota United, while also playing a major role in his side’s MLS Leagues Cup triumph.
His performances in North America have caught the eye of multiple sides around Europe, as Lazio look to beat the likes of Marseille, Bayer Leverkusen and Wolves.
Maurizo Sarri’s side have struggled to build any momentum in the 2025/26 campaign and suffered two major losses in the opening stages of 2026.
Matteo Guendouzi and Taty Castellanos joined Fenerbahce and West Ham respectively, leaving two huge holes in the Lazio starting eleven.
Sarri is set to lose another key player during the January window, as Tijani Noslin nears an exit and the veteran coach is looking to retaliate with some key additions.
Lazio have already signed some reinforcements, bringing in Kenneth Taylor, Petar Ratkov, Edoardo Motta, and Daniel Maldini (on loan) – but their business may not be over.
Obeda’s deal in Seattle is set to expire in December and the MLS franchise are yet to tie the Mexican international down to a new contract.
According to reports, Lazio are preparing a €15million bid for the final days of January and may be boosted by Obeda’s aspirations of playing in Europe.
Maurizio Sarri Faces Lazio Sack
The Lazio manager has faced huge challenges this season, as his side were unable to sign players in the summer and lost two huge players in the opening days of this year.
Sarri has been very vocal over his frustrations towards Claudio Lotito and the Lazio board, causing his future to be surrounded in doubt.
Lazio were held to a 0-0 stalemate by Lecce in their latest Serie A outing, adding further doubts over Sarri’s future as the Laziali were thrashed 3-0 by Como just five days before.
Discomfort within the club have traveled into the stands, as Lazio supporters are planning a boycott for the upcoming league clash against Genoa.
The frustration from supporters appears to be directed towards the Lazio hierarchy as opposed to Sarri, but the situation has added further stress to the Italian’s position.
Sarri’s deal in Rome does not expire until June 2027, but the 67-year-old is willing to walk away from the job if the club fails to meet his expectations.
