Yunus Musah is reportedly looking to terminate his loan deal with Atalanta and the USMNT star may consider a move to the MLS.

The USMNT midfielder joined La Dea on loan at the start of September after Massimiliano Allegri made it clear that his minutes with AC Milan would be limited.

This move to Bergamo was expected to boost Musah back into the limelight in Serie A, as the American international started in just two matches between MD30-38.

Overall, Musah accumulated around 1500 minutes in Italy’s top division, which is a below average tally for a top player in Serie A and caused the USMNT star to move on.

However, his time with Atalanta has not gone according to plan so far, as Musah has not featured in a Serie A starting eleven this season and Ivan Juric is reportedly disappointed with the 22-year-old’s performances.

Musah’s only start for La Dea so far came during a 4-0 defeat by PSG in the Champions League and the USMNT was an unused substitute in La Dea’s latest UCL clash against Slavia Prague.

Being an American in Serie A brings its own pressure as Italian soccer is renowned in the United States, which has only been amplified by Christian Pulisic’s time with AC Milan.

Musah appears to have struggled with this during his spells at Atalanta and AC Milan, as the young midfielder enjoyed a successful period with Valencia in La Liga – making 108 appearances for the Spanish side.

The 22-year-old’s loan deal with Atalanta expires at the end of this season, but Musah is reportedly looking to cut ties with La Dea in the January window and could move back to the United States.

Would Yunus Musah Move To MLS?

Although Musah was born in New York City, the American international moved to Italy at a very young age and learned his craft in a host of European countries.

At nine-years-old, the Atalanta midfielder moved to London to join the academy set-up at Arsenal and was eventually let go by the Gunners in 2019 – signing for Valencia B.

This means that despite representing the United States at international level, Musah has never competed in the United States’ elite soccer division.

Many USMNT stars have never played in the MLS, with Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie both moving to Europe at a young age and skipping the early stages in the United States.

McKennie has been linked with a move to the MLS, but is reportedly now looking to revive his career with Juventus, while Pulisic has expressed his desire to retire in the USA.

At 22-years-old, Musah is still in the early stages of his career and may be keen on cementing his name in the world of European soccer before making a move to North America.

However, if he cannot find regular minutes in Europe’s top five leagues, Musah could push for a switch to Major League Soccer and his links to New York could tempt NYCFC into a move.

One factor that could be a stumbling block is Musah’s current salary, as the USMNT is reportedly earning €49,000 per week in Italy and this would make him the highest paid player in NYC.

Will Yunus Musah Play For USMNT At 2026 World Cup?

Musah’s lack of playing-time has come at a poor time as the 2026 World Cup is not only around the corner, but also being held in the Atalanta’s home nation.

The 22-year-old has picked-up 47 caps for the United States, however, Mauricio Pochettino did not select the Atalanta midfielder in the USMNT’s last camp.

In fact, Musah’s last appearance for the USMNT came in March of this year, as the dynamic midfielder caused some controversy for excluding himself from selection for the Gold Cup.

His recent absence from the United States’ squad should cause some concern and Musah may consider this when deciding on his future in Bergamo.
