Jose Mourinho has said it is the worst start of his career after Roma suffered an embarrassing 4-1 defeat away to Genoa on Thursday night. The Giallorossi have had an abysmal start to the season and have picked up just five points after six matches.
The Portuguese head coach spoke to DAZN post-match and discussed the team’s performance, Lukaku’s goal and his squad:
“I don’t have much to say and I don’t want to talk much. I haven’t spoken to the players, when that’s the case I don’t want to answer questions.”
On Roma’s performance: “We started badly, we had a reaction when we equalized but then Diego’s injury immediately occurred and the structure of the team changed. With Mancini booked and the profile of this referee we thought about changing it and the structure changed again.”
On Lukaku’s goal: “They were low, we had the dominance even without quality and great opportunities. They closed down, after the 3-1 the match was over. People talked about Ibanez’s mistakes but the truth is that it gave us incredible solidity.”
On the squad: “When we lack players we have less solidity, but it is not correct to say that we have less just because of the absence of players. It is also the consequence of team spirit and collective work. Every shot on goal is a goal, I’m not talking about Rui: I’m talking about the moment. It’s the worst start of my career, but I also think that Roma played in two European finals with me.”
“It is the group we have and with this group we must get out of this moment. There is no transfer market and it is the squad we have. There is no time to cry. Tomorrow we will be working and the next one becomes a very important match.”
