Mourinho: ‘Monza didn’t deserve to lose’

Roma coach Josè Mourinho doesn’t believe Monza deserved to lose to his Roma side today: “We made a lot of mistakes and we suffered.” A Stephan El Shaarawy was enough to make the difference late in the game, despite the Giallorossi having numerical superiority for much of the game after Danilo D’Ambrosio’s red card.

Speaking with Sky Sport Italia, Mourinho analysed the match, explaining why he thinks the opponents were better than the result:

 “They didn’t deserve to lose the game. My team was always in difficulty, we made a lot of mistakes and we suffered. It was a game with a low technical level but a high emotional level.”

“Without Dybala and Pellegrini we lack a link between midfield and attack. I tried to do that with Aouar but it’s different. With the double forward we did well but without a 10 it is more difficult for us.

“Pablo Marì looked like a tree, perfect with a low block. Vignato took over and did very well. I have a very real relationship with my players, they know I prefer an ugly truth than a beautiful lie.”

“My sending off? I don’t know why I took the red, I just made a gesture to the bench. No words. The Monza bench put so much pressure on the referee, they shouldn’t have behaved like that. I only say to them that they were very good”.

“After the defeat against Genoa we strengthened the midfield with two permanent players. We are not a fast team and we sought a balance, which we lost today. A draw at home against Monza or a defeat would have changed little, so we pushed forward.”
