AC Milan midfielder Yunus Musah revealed that teammate Mike Maignan didn’t want to continue playing after receiving racist insults in Udine. The Frenchman was the victim of vile racist abuse from behind his goal, and informed the referee, asking him to stop the match until action was taken. The mayor of Udinese has since offered to make Maignan and honorary citizen of the city, but Musah had different thoughts on the incident, as quoted by La Gazzetta dello Sport:
“The fans always shout something against us, but enough is enough. It happened to me at Valencia (racist insults to Vinicius, ed) and also on Saturday. However, we have shown that something can be done on the pitch.”
“Mike did not want to continue, but we stood by him and did not leave him alone. These actions must now have consequences. Something has to be done and our reaction on the pitch was right, it gave us the confidence that we are a united group.”
Udinese have since taken action, ensuring that those found guilty will be banned from the stadium for life.
