Inter and AC Milan’s desire to build a new San Siro involves flattening the existing stadium, but the project faces a new obstacle as officials prohibit the demolition on historical grounds.

What is the New Plan For San Siro?

Plans for a new San Siro are some way off being confirmed, but AC and Inter Milan are keen to gain control over the process.

Both clubs are close to purchasing the San Siro from Milan’s city council in order to speed up plans.

A joint proposal has been submitted to the Milanese municipality. It would involve clearing the majority of the surrounding area while keeping parts of the existing club museum intact, and building a new 71,500-seat stadium.

The stadium has a projected completion by 2031, providing the plans can be set in motion sooner rather than later. The bidding is uncontested by any other parties, so Inter and Milan should face no opposition in taking control of the stadium’s future.

Once a gleaming example of Italian soccer’s vigor in the late 1990’s — following what remains its latest renovation — the San Siro is now an outdated, unfit-for-purpose stadium that is badly in need of updating.

Unfortunately, neither the city council, nor Milan’s two soccer institutions who call it home are willing to cough up money for the current stadium to be updated.

If and when Milan and Inter do purchase the stadium, they see far more value in building a new state-of-the-art arena, as opposed to the difficult process of renovation.

The San Siro is currently at risk of being excluded from Euro 2032‘s host stadiums, after being deemed unfit for purpose by organizers. This has only accelerated plans to try and demolish it, and fast-track a new era-defining stadium in Milan.

With plenty of obstacles getting in their way already, plans for a new San Siro could be held up by another concern.

San Siro Demolition Could Be Blocked on Historical Grounds

Inter and Milan, who are among offshore sportsbooks‘ leading pack for the Scudetto next season, have already been presented with an injunction opposing the demolition of the third tier — but further complications could soon arise.

That is according to reports Italy, which reveal a similar injunction could be placed on historic commemorative plaques and memorabilia surrounding the iconic ground.

This could prevent sections of the stadium being demolished on historical grounds. Although it is unclear how much of the stadium would need to be preserved, it could complicate plans to flatten it entirely.
