Could Nuno Tavares Still Be Sold Despite Lazio Claiming He Didn’t Leave The Stadium During Rome Derby?

With the latest Nuno Tavares transfer news intensifying in recent days, could Lazio decide to sell the left-back? 

Tavares’ costly error during the Rome Derby led to the only goal of the game for Lorenzo Pellegrini. He was hit with backlash online as well as a scathing from head coach Maurizio Sarri.

The 1-0 loss to arch rivals Roma means the Biancocelesti has picked up just one win from their opening four games of the 2025-26 Serie A season.

In June, the Nuno Tavares transfer news reported that Maurizio Sarri was ready to move the Portuguese defender on. That despite Lazio making his loan move from Arsenal permanent in May.

However, a transfer embargo was enforced upon the Biancocelesti so Sarri decided to keep him in the capital. After his error on MD4, Sarri didn’t hold back and blasted the 25-year-old.

Their uncertain relationship has hit a new low and the former Chelsea, Napoli and Juventus boss may move Tavares on in the January transfer window.

Tavares would likely leave the Stadio Olimpico for a fee of around €30-40million. Former club Arsenal have a reported 40% sell on clause inserted into his deal so securing as much cash as possible is vital.

Did Nuno Tavares Leave The Stadio Olimpico During The Rome Derby?

After his Rome Derby error which led to the winning goal, Tavares was hauled off at half-time. Reports on September 22 suggested he left the stadium with the game still going on.

However, Lazio director Angelo Fabiani explained that Tavares did not leave. Therefore, he will not be fined as was previously mooted.

“He didn’t leave the stadium. Obviously, he was angry and disappointed, like all of us,” Fabiani said.

“There will be no fine for a technical mistake that anyone can make on the pitch.”

Lazio’s Fixtures

After Lazio’s poor start to the new season, the Biancocelesti face a trip to Genoa on MD5. Patrick Vieira’s side are currently winless and occupy 16th spot in the table.

In October, Lazio face four vital league games. The first comes against Torino at home before taking on Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium.

Following that, Maurizio Sarri’s side entertain Juventus before taking on newly-promoted Pisa away. On paper, there are certainly some ‘winnable’ games there as well as some harder encounters against Serie A’s big boys.

It’s not sure whether Sarri will stick by Nuno Tavares for all of those games but one thing that is for sure is that his future in Rome is very much on the line.
