OFFICIAL: Claudio Ranieri returns to Roma for third spell as manager

Roma have officially announced the appointment of Claudio Ranieri as the new head coach of the first team. This marks Ranieri’s third stint at the helm of the Giallorossi, a club he has supported since childhood and previously represented both as a player and manager.

The decision comes at a critical time for Roma, who currently sit 12th in Serie A after 12 matches, just four points above the relegation zone. The club recently parted ways with Ivan Juric following the earlier dismissal of Daniele De Rossi.

In an official statement, Roma expressed their delight at Ranieri’s return, highlighting his deep connection to the club and the city. The 72-year-old Roman native will take on the role of Technical Manager for the remainder of the season, after which he will transition into a senior executive position as a consultant to the ownership on all sporting matters.

Ranieri’s extensive experience in top European leagues, including Serie A, Premier League, La Liga, and Ligue 1, was cited as a key factor in his appointment. The club emphasized his track record of success, particularly his historic Premier League title with Leicester City in 2016.

This appointment represents a homecoming for Ranieri, who played for Roma’s youth team in the 1971-72 season and made his senior debut for the club in 1973-74. As a manager, he previously led Roma from 2009 to 2011 and again in 2019.

Ranieri will reunite with several players from his previous tenure, including Bryan Cristante, Lorenzo Pellegrini, and Stephan El Shaarawy. He’s also familiar with Eldor Shomurodov, whom he coached at Cagliari last season.

The club expressed confidence that Ranieri’s return will add significant value to the team and the entire AS Roma organization, concluding their announcement with a warm “Welcome back home, Mister!”
