Empoli have officially announced Roberto D’Aversa as their new head coach, marking a fresh start for the Tuscan side after narrowly avoiding relegation last season.
D’Aversa, who most recently managed Lecce, has signed a contract with Empoli until June 30, 2026. The appointment comes after Davide Nicola, who led the team to safety, departed for Cagliari.
The 48-year-old Italian coach was previously close to joining Cesena but ultimately chose to accept Empoli’s offer, embracing the project presented by the Serie A club. D’Aversa brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously managed Parma and Sampdoria in Italy’s top flight.
D’Aversa’s tenure at Lecce ended controversially in March 2024 when he was dismissed for headbutting Hellas Verona striker Thomas Henry after a match. Despite this incident, the coach has since apologized and expressed gratitude to Lecce fans for their support during his time at the club.
