Raphael Varane, the French defender who recently joined Como, faced a setback during his debut match in the Coppa Italia against Sampdoria. Varane was forced to leave the field in the 23rd minute due to a knee injury, raising concerns within the Como camp. The former Manchester United player was replaced by Edoardo Goldaniga after walking off the pitch with the assistance of two physios.
Cesc Fabregas, speaking at the post-match press conference, commented on the situation: “It was planned for him to play half the match and then Goldaniga the other half. I’m sorry about the injury. It seems he hurt his knee, but we have to wait for the tests.”
Varane’s injury is a significant blow as he was expected to make a strong impression on his new teammates. Despite his early exit, Como managed to equalize after Sampdoria’s Nicholas Ioannou opened the scoring. Patrick Cutrone scored for Como just before halftime, but the match ultimately went to penalties, where Sampdoria emerged victorious.
