Forward Mateo Retegui has been selected in Roberto Mancini’s national squad for the first time in his career. He could feature in the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers as the Azzurri take on England and Malta. On loan from Boca Juniors, Retegui has been playing for fellow Argentinian side Tigre and his performances have not gone unnoticed by Mancini. Despite being born in Argentina, Retegui is eligible to play for Italy through his grandfather and having scored a total of 28 goals in his last 48 games in South America, Mancini wasted no time in selecting the 23-year-old in his squad.
Inter appear to be leading the race to sign Retegui and have already made contact with his father, who also represents his son as his agent. However, both Milan and Roma have been keeping close tabs on the attacker and Boca have already rejected an offer from Udinese in January. Speaking with Gazzetta dello Sport, Retegui’s father discussed his son’s potential future destination and his recent call-up.
“Yes, I can confirm that many European clubs have been looking for him, Europe is his obvious dream. Who? Everywhere, interest from Italy, Spain, Germany and even the Premier League.”
