Rocchi clarifies VAR decisions in recent Serie A matches

Gianluca Rocchi, the Serie A referee designator, addressed the most controversial refereeing incidents of the week during the Open Var program on DAZN.

Regarding the Milan-Udinese match, Rocchi supported the on-field decision to show a red card to Reijnders. He explained that while Reijnders’ movement was natural, there was clear contact and a foul was the most logical call due to the crossing of legs. Rocchi noted that Lovric had the advantage on the ball, and both players changed their running direction.

Rocchi admitted that not booking Traore for his challenge on Chukwueze was a mistake, describing it as a classic “step on foot” that warranted a yellow card. He also clarified the decision to disallow Kabasele’s goal, stating that Ekkelenkamp was marginally offside and participated in the play, making it a subjective decision that required the referee to review the monitor.

Addressing the Juventus-Lazio match, Rocchi discussed the controversial incident involving Douglas Luiz and Patric. He described it as a non-accidental episode and a gesture that officials disapprove of. Rocchi explained that VAR’s non-intervention was based on the intensity of the contact, which was deemed more of a half-push than a significant blow. He acknowledged that if the player had been sent off on the field, there would have been no complaints. Rocchi also noted that Patric slightly exaggerated his reaction, which contributed to VAR’s decision not to intervene.
