Roma’s transfer market activity continues to gain momentum as they explore the possibility of signing experienced midfielder Sergi Roberto on a free transfer. The Spanish player has emerged as an intriguing prospect for the Italian club.
Following the arrivals of Matias Soulé from Juventus and Artem Dovbyk from Girona, Roma has significantly bolstered their attacking options. Now, Calciomercato report that sporting director Florent Ghisolfi is focusing on potential departures, with Tammy Abraham’s future being a key consideration. However, the club is also keen on strengthening their wide positions, having already added Samuel Dahl to the squad.
In recent weeks, Roma has reportedly made initial inquiries about Sergi Roberto, whose contract with Barcelona expired on June 30th. The club has reached out to the player’s representatives to gather information and gauge his interest in a potential move to the Italian capital.
However, Roma face competition for the 32-year-old’s signature. Both Como and Ajax have also expressed interest in securing Roberto’s services on a free transfer.
Barcelona has yet to officially bid farewell to Sergi Roberto, but with no contract renewal forthcoming, the player finds himself without a club just two weeks before the start of the new season.
The departure of Roberto from Barcelona has left his former teammate Marc-André ter Stegen, who inherited the captain’s armband, feeling regretful. In a recent interview, ter Stegen expressed his disappointment at Roberto’s silent exit, mentioning a failed attempt to contact him due to phone issues.
During his time at Barcelona, Sergi Roberto reportedly earned a net salary of €2.4 million for the 2023/24 season. As Roma considers this potential signing, they will need to weigh the financial aspects alongside the wealth of experience Roberto could bring to the team.
